A whole genre has emerged around intellectualizing the dangerous and rigged avenues of this country where too many young people fall prey to cyclic violence and lack of opportunity. This book participates in that without compromising on the reality. And it’s not a book about the authors childhood, looking back, now that he’s gone to university and is educated and can really see. This is a book of looking around and seeing. It’s written by a person who still lives in his community. Looking forward to book two.

This is hands down a book that I highly recommend to be read by Newark’s inner-city youth — especially by the young men who find themselves caught up in the street lifestyle. The author provides descriptive accounts of what actually happens in the lifestyle along with the consequences that often result of said lifestyle. The imagery was impeccable and I was able to relate by the notable city mentions throughout the book. This truly was a good read and I’m anxious for part 2!

Naeem’s debut novel will catch your eye from page one and leave you wanting more! The message to the youth that glamorize the street and gang life is this: It all looks good until your freedom or life is taken away from you…in the blink of an eye!
